A Town Hall session was held for staff from the Ministry of Energy, Department of Electrical Services and its associated Statutory Bodies on Tuesday, 28th December 2020 at the Banquet Hall, Prime Minister's Office. The session was led by Yang Berhormat Dato Seri Setia Dr. Awang Haji Mat Suny bin Haji Md. Hussein, Minister of Energy and attended by over 200 staff in observance of Ministry of Health guidelines for physical distancing.

Also present were Yang Mulia Dato Seri Paduka Awang Haji Matsatejo bin Sokiaw, Deputy Minister of Energy; Yang Mulia Awang Haji Azhar bin Haji Yahya, Permanent Secretary; Yang Mulia Pengiran Haji Jamra Weira bin Pengiran Haji Petra, Deputy Permanent Secretary; officers and staff from the Ministry of Energy; the Department of Electrical Services; Safety, Health and Environment National Authority (SHENA), and the Petroleum Authority of Brunei Darussalam (PA).

The session focused on familiarizing members of the organisation with the Ministry's status following its 1-year anniversary as the Ministry of Energy, and the Ministry of Energy's Strategic Plan 2020-2025 which is aimed at guiding the Ministry and its associated agencies' efforts to contribute to the realization of Wawasan Brunei 2035. The Strategic Plan is the result of input from all units, divisions and agencies under the Ministry of Energy.

In his welcoming remarks, Yang Berhormat Dr. Awang Haji Mat Suny bin Haji Md. Hussein, Minister of Energy expressed the importance of cohesion among the Ministry and its associated agencies, as well as upholding a Whole-of-Government approach. During the past year, downstream industry developments have come to the forefront as main economic contributors, in spite of the COVID-19 pandemic. Upstream and midstream activities continue to be managed to ensure business continuity in light of the challenges arising from the COVID-19 pandemic. At the same time, the Ministry continues to make progress with securing local employment and business opportunities from the energy sector. The past year has triggered global conversation about the importance of energy security and resilience. With its new Strategic Plan, the Ministry places greater emphasis on adaptive and innovative responses to support the Ministry's renewed vision of "Sustainable and Diverse Energy for Brunei Darussalam's Growth and Prosperity". Meanwhile, Yang Berhormat Minister of Energy also emphasised the Ministry's Mission for "Leading a dynamic, reliable, safe and innovative energy sector for socio-economic development and the people" underpinned by 8 strategic objectives: Diversification of the Energy Sector; Effective and Sustainable Hydrocarbon Resource Management; Green Energy; Affordable, Safe, Reliable, Efficient and Modern Energy Supply; Highly Skilled Bruneian Workforce in the Energy Sector; Supporting Socio-Economic Development through Energy Sector Spin-offs; Robust and Conducive Regulatory Framework and Safety Standards; and Organisational Excellence.

The session was later followed by presentations on each strategic objective delivered by the respective Heads of Departments and Divisions.

Yang Mulia Dato Seri Paduka Awang Haji Matsatejo bin Sokiaw, Deputy Minister of Energy then presented further on key challenges and ways forward for the Ministry of Energy. He highlighted that among the challenges faced by the country's energy sector includes uncertainties and upcoming requirements for new areas such as Deepwater exploration and development; availability of local technical competencies as the energy sector grows; and the need to promote a growth mindset for local businesses in the energy sector. He further added that in overcoming these challenges, the opportunities include digital transformation of Brunei Darussalam's energy sector in order to stay abreast of the fourth industrial revolution; improved regulatory practices for better local content and employment optimization in the sector's growth; and closer inter-ministerial and international cooperation in order to achieve the Ministry's vision and mission.

The session was followed by a Question and Answer Session and concluded with closing remarks from Yang Berhormat Dato Seri Setia Dr. Awang Haji Mat Suny bin Haji Md. Hussein, Minister of Energy.

The Town Hall Session is held from time-to-time to discuss and disseminate information on the Ministry's progress and other key issues.
