Yang Mulia Awang Haji Azhar bin Haji Yahya, Permanent Secretary (Energy) and Interim Managing Director of the Petroleum Authority of Brunei Darussalam attended the Brunei Gas Carriers Sdn Bhd (BGC) Maritime Talent Pipeline Achievement Ceremony on 31st August 2020 as the Guest of Honour. The event was held at Indera Samudra Grand Hall, The Empire Brunei.
The ceremony was organized to celebrate the three important milestones, namely, the promotion to rank of senior and junior BGC Ship Officers, the signing of contracts for BGC's new cadets, and the signing of a memorandum of understanding with the Brunei Maritime Academy (BMA) under the Institute of Brunei Technical Education (IBTE).
These significant milestones strengthen the Bruneian workforce to fill both employment and key positions within the company.
Mr. John Douglas Cook, Managing Director of BGC during his welcoming remarks highlighted Brunei Darussalam's rich heritage in the history of maritime trade with shipping playing an essential role in supporting the country's economy where BGC remains an important asset to the country. He added, "It is imperative for our industry to continually develop strategies that ensure safety and sustainability – not only for the raw materials that are transported but also for its people."
In his remarks he also highlighted BGC's aims to be the leading developer of local shipping and maritime skills from cadet level up to Senior Management in support of Brunei's Vision 2035, the most recent example of which is today's Maritime Talent Pipeline Achievements Ceremony. The event ended with a tour of poster displays showing life at sea and the cadetship recruitment process.
