19-Feb-2020 : Minister of Energy Receives Courtesy Call from Upstream Director of Royal Dutch Shell

Yang Berhormat Dato Seri Setia Dr. Awang Haji Mat Suny bin Haji Md. Hussein, Minister of Energy received a courtesy call from Mr. Wael Sawan, Upstream Director of Royal Dutch Shell on 19th February 2020 during a 2-day visit to Brunei Darussalam.

During the call, Yang Berhormat Minister of Energy congratulated Mr. Wael Sawan on his appointment as Upstream Director as of mid-2019. The Ministry and the Brunei Shell Joint Venture (BSJV) companies will continue to work closely with the support of Royal Dutch Shell.

Both sides discussed key upcoming activities that would be shaping the oil and gas sector in the next 5 years. Brunei Darussalam will be venturing into more deepwater exploration activities. Sustaining an upward production profile in a manner that is also environmentally friendly will be critical for enhancing the longevity of Brunei Darussalam's oil and gas sector.

In addition, like the rest of the global market, the Brunei Shell Joint Venture companies will have to contend with dynamic customer needs. Technology will be an important part of this process.

Both sides expressed pleasure at the long-standing cooperation in the Oil and Gas sector between Brunei Darussalam and Royal Dutch Shell Plc, as well as the BSJV companies' contribution to the economy and society as a whole.

The BSJV companies – comprising of Brunei Shell Petroleum Company Sdn. Bhd., Brunei LNG Sdn. Bhd., Brunei Gas Carriers Sdn. Bhd., and Brunei Shell Marketing Company Sdn. Bhd. – consists of over 5,000 employees with 89% locals, and several more are indirectly employed through contractors and sub-contractors in the oil and gas sector.

Also present at the courtesy call were Yang Mulia Dato Seri Paduka Awang Haji Matsatejo bin Sokiaw, Deputy Minister of Energy; Yang Mulia Awang Haji Azhar bin Haji Yahya, Permanent Secretary (Energy); Mr. Peter Costello, Senior Vice President, Shell Upstream Conventional Oil & Gas; and Dr. Ceri Powell, Managing Director, Brunei Shell Petroleum Company Sdn. Bhd.
